When you’re an apartment manager, there’s no doubt that you’re going to run across a great number of odors. And while some of them are relatively easy to get out, some may take a little extra work and in some cases, maybe even a little extra cash.
Let’s review some of the most common odors your nose will encounter:
Cigarette Smoke
The lingering aroma of cigarette smoke can be one of the most difficult smells to remove from an apartment. It can also be one of the strongest smells to turn off potential renters.
Temporary Solution: If you need to get rid of cigarette smell from an apartment, leave small bowls out in several places around the apartment. Fill the bowls with multipurpose cleaner that carries a pine aroma. This is a very strong smell that will mask (but not eliminate) the odors.
Appliances
Appliances can often have very strong and nasty odors. These smells can sometimes be so bad that they carry over into other areas of the apartment. Two of the biggest culprits of bad smells in an apartment are the dishwasher and the refrigerator.
Temporary Solution: To get rid of a funky smell coming from the dishwasher, simply squeeze a fresh lemon into the soap dispenser. Then just run a full cycle, and the next time you open it, it will smell refreshing and bright!
To get bad smells out of a fridge, first make sure it’s completely empty and then clean it with a combination of bleach and water. Give it a very good rinse and then allow it to air dry. Be sure not to overlook things like the top of the inside of the fridge and the crisper drawers. After the fridge is completely dry, leave an open box of baking soda in the fridge to absorb any remaining odors and any odors that may crop up during the time the fridge, and the apartment, are empty.
All Around Odors
Occasionally, drop lime peels down things like garbage disposals. The acid will kill bacteria, while the smell will be fresh and will last quite some time.
You can also place either unused tea bags or coffee grounds in coffee filters in inconspicuous areas like cupboards and drawers. These absorb odors and neutralize the air around them, so you don’t have to worry about odors building up.
These are all temporary solutions that will mask the problem.
